ISI Web of Knowledge in action - How
Century of Science is making a difference at the University of
Kyushu:
Century of Science offers "a different advantage"
for Japanese research powerhouse
With 16,500 students and more than 6,000 researchers in 10 undergraduate
schools, 14 graduate schools, 15 graduate facilities, and three research
institutes, Kyushu University is a research powerhouse in Japan. The
renowned institution ranks among the top one percent of institutions
worldwide in 17 different scientific fields, according to
Essential Science Indicators(SM).
Kyushu University was also the first in Japan to subscribe to
Web of Science, and the first institution
in the Asia-Pacific region to acquire the
Century of Science expansion.
According to Kyushu University Vice President Setsuo Arikawa, these tools
greatly improve the level of research the institution produces.
"Our researchers need to know the worldwide trends in their fields of
study; to objectively understand the influence of research," said Arikawa.
"By highlighting trends and demonstrating influence, the Web of
Science allows our researchers to take the next step - building a
research strategy."
Web of Science provides researchers access to current and
retrospective multidisciplinary information from 8,700 of the most
prestigious, high-impact journals. Web of Science also provides
cited-reference searching, allowing users to navigate through their
research. In April 2005, Web of Science was given new depth with
the release of Century of Science. Compiled by 120 Thomson staff
members over two years, the Century of Science collection expands
Web of Science to include the most important scientific
bibliographic and cited-reference data from 1900 forward. "Century of
Science gives our researchers a different advantage," Arikawa added.
"Of course, Century of Science is important for our research
strategy. But it also gives us the opportunity to understand 'the
mainstream'. Our users access relevant, historical materials through
Century of Science. They see how academic fields were born and how
materials have been used."
"For Web of Science with Century of Science, Thomson has
compiled the core of research. Whichever area researchers focus on, they
now can understand the history of their modern science, which, in essence,
allows them to begin a new flow of research. For this reason, Century
of Science helps us increase the quality of work we do."
